Supporting Democracy

Back in 2003, Kraisorn Prasert exhibited a piece of art to honour democracy. His inspiration came from a Buddhist custom of supporting a tree with posts. Kraisorn used 71 supporting sticks, each 7 metres in length, and then invited the public to draw on them in order to celebrate the 71st anniversary of the shift of government power from monarchy to democracy in 1932. All of the wooden poles were lent against the main structure of the Democracy Monument, as if they were “supporting democracy”. His artwork shows how the general public could contribute in maintaining Thailand’s democracy.

The picture was taken at the Krugthep 226 exhibition at the Bangkok Arts and Culture Center and runs until February 2009.
